5IN’s Process Based Learning

The main medium of education and growth at 5IN is our unique process-based learning system. As the world changes ever more quickly, making predicting the world of tomorrow ever more difficult, it is ever clearer that having students prepare for the future by learning established past content is a futile act (and also easily achieved with a search query).

Success in the future will not come from content knowledge, but rather the ability to achieve real results. In light of this, 5IN’s main mission is to present, familiarize, and instill our students with the habits of mind and work processes that are applicable across various contexts and situations, from academic to professional, from individual to social. By making the practice and utilization of cross-contextually applicable thinking and work habits the main focus of the curriculum and assessment, 5IN ensures that students will have the tools necessary to succeed and contribute in a world with an unclear and rapidly changing future, regardless of environment or situation. By focusing on processes, students understand that their learning and performance are not seen as static and final, but that it can always be improved and worked on, that each and every day is a valuable and meaningful one.

By focusing on the practice and utilization of processes as the main vehicle of learning, 5IN can avoid the common pitfalls of other curricula, such as the low practical value of content-driven traditional curricula, or the haphazard lack of comprehensive structure and superficial goals of many project-based learning programs.

Most importantly, as the processes that 5IN advocates are cross-contextual, each and every student has the opportunity to achieve and self-actualize value that is suited to their individual situations. Each and every student has the opportunity to be recognized and celebrated, regardless of traditional academic measures of strength. Each student recognizes the potential within themselves and the value that they can each bring to the world. Each student feels valued and respected, leading to greater engagement both in and out of the classroom.
