5IN ‘s Founding & Leadership Team
The founding team at 5IN includes Dr. Yu Lee, Mr. Scott Chen, and Dr. Renick Bell. Together, they have a collective teaching experience of more than sixty years, spanning over various education levels from elementary school to university, across six countries.
Dr. Yu Lee is Institute Director at 5IN. He received his doctorate in linguistics from Fudan University in Shanghai and his MA in TESOL from Teachers College, Columbia University in New York. His teaching experience spans primary school to university. Dr. Lee's more than twenty-five year career in working with students has been in the international education field, and more recently in experimental education. He has broad experience in most departments found in schools, starting from being a teacher to serving as director of academics and student affairs, spokesperson and public relations, to eventually vice principal and principal of various programs. Complimentary to these roles, Dr. Lee is also a published author in academic journals, a curator and interviewer of various live fireside chats, and a public speaker on issues in education.
Dr. Lee's main areas of teaching include communication, language, business studies, and academic skills. He has designed various curricula from the ground up, always with a focus on real world skills, engagement with society, personal creativity, and social responsibility. He has been the event organizer of numerous public "charity day" events and education/public engagement events. Currently, his main mission is to transform the public's understanding of what education is and what its goals should be, and to establish a flexible blueprint of education that will be the model for decades to come. Dr. Lee is a native English speaker, has become proficient in Mandarin Chinese, and is conversational in Japanese. He is involved in animal charity in his free time.
Mr. Scott Chen is the Executive Operations Director of 5IN. Mr. Chen holds an Honors Science degree from the University of Waterloo. With over 10 years of teaching experience, he has guided students of different age groups—from elementary school children to adults—in subjects such as English, Math, Science, and Physical Education.
He is proficient in both Chinese and English and brings more than 8 years of translation experience, further enhancing his ability to connect with diverse learners. Mr. Chen is also well-versed in assisting students with university applications, whether for international institutions or through Taiwan's Special Talent (特殊選才) pathway, offering personalized guidance to help them stand out. He is dedicated to creating a positive and engaging learning environment, where students are encouraged to explore and achieve their full potential. His passion for education drives him to make learning both accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
Dr. Renick Bell is STEAM Director at 5IN. He holds a PhD in art from Tama Art University in Tokyo and has worked in the education field for over 20 years. He has taught at every age level and in a variety of contexts in many countries, including: national and private universities; experimental education at the junior high and high school level; adult professional training; extracurricular training; college test preparation; technical workshops; and guest lectures. His students have ranged from 5 to 80 years of age, and course sizes have ranged from classes of 80 and more to one-on-one instruction. He has developed curricula and course content at all of these levels for courses on a broad range of topics: programming, creative coding, design, music composition, audio engineering, writing, language, public speaking, philosophy and aesthetics, science, and yoga. In designing such curricula and teaching material, he emphasizes learning through doing or experiential learning.
He is the author of three software libraries for the sequencing of algorithmic processes which are intended for use in live coding (improvisational programming as performance). He is a researcher in the field of algorithmic art, with articles published in professional journals and conference proceedings. With designer Joana Chicau, he recently completed a major research project in algorithmic art which was funded by the Creative Industries Fund NL in the Netherlands. He is an internationally recognized artist and performer and pioneer in the field of live coding, with over 200 performances around the world, and his art has been sold to collectors worldwide and exhibited in Europe. He is a native English speaker and also speaks Mandarin and Japanese. He is originally from Texas but has lived in Asia since 2001.
Jonathan Sherman is the Director of AI and Education Development at 5IN. He is a multifaceted professional active as a software developer, AI researcher, educator and musician. With a rich background spanning technology, education and the arts, he finds that work across these seemingly contrasting fields yields meaningful combinations that inform his innovative approach.
Jonathan is a PhD candidate in Social Networks and Human-Centered Computing at National Tsing Hua University and Academia Sinica. His previous academic achievements include an M.A. in Digital Music and Media Composition from University College Cork (First Class Honours) and Dual Bachelor's degrees in Political Science and International Affairs from the University of New Hampshire.
As an AI researcher at Academia Sinica, Jonathan was awarded the Taiwan Research Performance Fellowship in 2022. His research focused on developing AI and machine learning projects for assistive speech technologies, and his published works include "Speech Enhancement based on Denoising Autoencoder with Multi-branched Encoders," "A Study of Incorporating Articulatory Movement Information in Speech Enhancement," and "EMA2S: An End-to-End Multimodal Articulatory-to-Speech System."
In education, Jonathan brings over a decade of experience teaching across diverse contexts. He has taught computer programming, AI and machine learning, music, English language arts, literature at international schools in both Shanghai and Taipei. He has developed and implemented school-wide education systems, staff training programs and model curricula aligned with international education standards.
Jonathan's programming expertise centers on Python, JavaScript and C as general languages, with specialized knowledge in designing Machine Learning and Deep Learning models for various applications.
